Ballard County Launches Expansion & Retention Program

Ballard County

The Ballard Fiscal Court, Ballard County Economic and Industrial Authority, Ballard Chamber of Commerce and Ballard Econ Board hosted the first ever Ballard County Business Retention and Expansion event in Kevil!

Through the development of the Discover Ballard Website strategic planning process and other public forums with elected officials and other community leaders, existing businesses expressed the desire for some help from local government and other agencies.
IN the spring of 2018 representatives from the Ballard Fiscal Court and the Ballard Econ Board attended the Ky Association of Economic Development Conference in Lexington. Through that conference contacts were made with UK college of Agriculture, to assist rural Kentucky on Economic Development Issues. The Ballard Fiscal Court and the UK College of Agriculture—CEDIK, entered into an agreement late in 2018 to begin the BRE process for Ballard County businesses.
On Tuesday May 28, 2019 representatives and business owners from Ballard County businesses were hosted at a luncheon kickoff event in Kevil. The goal of the luncheon was to bring the University of Kentucky Reps and local businesses together to discuss the process of a BRE program. The beginning starts in the form of gathering information via survey’s of locally owned and operated businesses. The surveys’ will help gather information to assist local businesses with their needs to keep them viable and to help them potentially grow.

More than 150 invitations were sent out. More than 20 businesses, ed reps, chamber reps and local government attended the kickoff event. The UK Extension, Ballard County office director Tom Miller was on hand to assist CEDIK as well.

If your business was not represented you may still voice your opinions by contacting the Ballard Chamber, Ballard Econ Board, or the Fiscal Court to complete a business retention and expansion survey.

Ballard Chamber Director Myra Hook states “We appreciate the Fiscal Court and Judge Cooper bringing this opportunity to our county. They have been great supporters to the Chamber and its efforts to promote, grow and support our local businesses from the strategic plan, the discoverballard.com website, and now this initiative to help grow and expand our existing businesses.”

Hannah Chrietien, Ballard Econ Board Ex. Director said “We are fortunate to have such an active small-business community in our county. Thank you to everyone who took the time away from their busy schedules to help us help them, and I look forward to visiting with others as we strive to hear from as many of our local businesses as we can.”

“We were very excited and encouraged by the business participation rate at today’s kickoff. The UK folks told us that this is one of the largest turnouts they have ever had at a BRE kickoff. That tells you that Ballard County businesses are engaged and ready to sustain their businesses, grow or expand!” Todd Cooper
